Ace Hardware, a Recording Session, and a Day of Patching Everything

A work day out front, and a maintenance day behind the scenes.

The day

I worked at Ace Hardware from 08:00 to 13:00.

From 14:30 to 18:20 I took over a recording session that was already running. Once it wrapped, I rendered out the videos.

Patching everything

I ran updates on every server I manage. Most of them went through cleanly. A couple had been left half-updated by an earlier automatic update, so I finished those by hand.

I also upgraded my GitLab server, where all my code lives. I took a full backup first. The upgrade itself went fine, but the server hung while restarting. It sat there for about 17 minutes answering nothing, so I forced it to reset. It came back clean about a minute later.

Then I updated all my Rust projects to the newest version of the language. Partway through, the machine I build on ran out of disk space. Old build files from every project had piled up to about 160 GB. Nothing was lost. I cleared them all out, finished the update, and set up a nightly cleanup so it doesn't happen again.

A hosted server for a customer

I built a new hosted server for MathewsNetwork, running UniFi's management software so they can manage their network gear from anywhere. It's set up so they can move off their current cloud server, which runs an older version of that software. Their own web address isn't pointed at us yet, so I set up RustProxy so it still works at a normal address in the meantime.

The ham radio hotspot is back

My DMR hotspot had stopped responding. An update last week had left its software half installed. I saved a copy of its settings, then ran the official reset tool, which reinstalled everything. It's back on the air, with my green theme still on the dashboard.

More on the reading-cue app

I set up a Windows test computer with Zoom on it, so I can try my friend's reading-cue app the way it will really be used. That turned up a couple of problems. If the app was closed during its first-time setup, it failed on every start after that until someone fixed it by hand. Now it notices and repairs itself. It also closes down cleanly now.
